Dead as a doornail....is that right? <br />
<i>Dead as a doornail?</i> <br />
Or is it a doorknob? <br />
Either way it doesn't make sense...... but I'll move on. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was a dead tree.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, some nice people came out & they cut that tree up piece by piece and they carried it through our backyard, down our driveway & to a truck. </div>
<div>
We offered our wheelbarrow but they were not interested. </div>
<div>
And I watched them working .... from my air conditioned room with the TV on, I'm sure. And I was grateful. Because we had a need & they met it. And we didn't have to.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
But I wondered....who benefits <i>most</i> from this right now.....</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Me? Sitting on my rear, relaxing while someone else helps us check something off our list?</div>
<div>
Or them? As they carry each heavy piece of tree down the driveway. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Lately, it seems we have been hoping for things in our family & things just haven't gone our way.</div>
<div>
We've been fairly honest about the things we desire. We have been incredibly vulnerable with things that feel tender & close & we've let people just be with us where we are. As uncomfortable as it is to sometimes feel like you're failing out in the open for all to see.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The most recent was our kids working towards a goal in a sport that 2 of them love. All 3 of them love it, but the 3rd has declared she doesn't like hard work ... so, we'll stay focused on the 2.</div>
<div>
It sounds silly at first to let a sport be a big disappointment this early in the game, and at the end of the day when they feel a little empty after all the hard work they put into something....we all have to remember that swimming is not about swimming. </div>
<div>
At least it isn't for us. </div>
<div>
It can't be. </div>
<div>
Swimming is an opportunity to live out the things we know to be true. </div>
<div>
To treat people well. </div>
<div>
To give your best effort for the audience of One. </div>
<div>
To encourage people. </div>
<div>
To respect & listen & apply the teaching of your coaches. </div>
<div>
To win well & lose well. </div>
<div>
To learn from your mistakes. </div>
<div>
I watched our kids walk away without the super prize & achievement they wanted at the end of it, but Lee & I saw <i>more</i>. </div>
<div>
We saw a boy who could lose & then immediately cheer his heart out for his teammates. <i>By name. </i></div>
<div>
We saw a girl bring laughter & joy to her team. We saw her most interested in pushing <i>others </i>forward.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
5+ years ago we started the process to adopt a child from Ethiopia. And for so many different reasons that story is not where we thought it would be today. There's a nursery that is still painted as a nursery & boy clothes still waiting. </div>
<div>
We prayed & prayed about it. <br />
So many friends & family gathered around us in support. People prayed for & with us, some gave money towards our adoption, people constantly encouraged to walk the road God laid out for us.</div>
<div>
We have never heard the Lord so clearly & we had never been in a sweeter spot as a family than when we began that journey of faith. And for anyone who has traveled that road knows it is gut wrenching. <br />
We did it all. </div>
<div>
We laid the most personal parts of our lives out on paper & had it notarized. We invited people into our home to critique who we are as people & as parents. We faced tremendous conflict with people we love. And when it all started to unravel, a dear friend reminded me that ....."this was never about a baby...."</div>
<div>
<br />
Because it's not. <br />
<i>It can't be.</i></div>
<div>
<br />
God has never asked for anything in return from me. His love has always been <i>for </i>me. His love is not conditional based upon my good works no matter how pure they are. There are things<i> we</i> missed out on, for sure. </div>
<div>
God is still bigger.</div>
<div>
<br />
I know wonderful people who want good things...spouses, children, employment.....and having or not having those things does not define a love or lack of from the Lord. </div>
<div>
And I wrestled with those words - <i>it's not about a baby</i>. </div>
<div>
Because I wanted him.</div>
<div>
I maybe even wanted this baby <i>more than</i>.....</div>
<div>
And coupling that with the way I thought we would be<i> seen</i> was crippling.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
And as I watched those men carrying their heavy loads down the driveway I realized that they are becoming stronger by doing the work .... & when <i>we</i> carry the heavy loads....so do we.</div>
<div>
At the swim team finish line, our children got the bitter taste of disappointment & the temptation to be jealous. The heavy load was placed on them...and what they were capable of in those moments made me proud.</div>
<div>
What I saw come out of me while carrying the burden of grief for this child of mine that we may never know short of Heaven was not pretty. And it was not glorifying. </div>
<div>
And we are bruised from the process. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I keep hearing that if God has given me a story, then He's given me a story to tell.</div>
<div>
But I haven't liked my story. So I didn't want to tell it until it took the turn that I wanted to tell.</div>
<div>
And there's not bow at the end.<br />
And somehow .... that's ok.<br />
The journey God's got us on is, well,...a journey. And I don't want to miss the opportunities to become stronger simply because I don't like the story.</div>
<div>
<br />

<div>
And once again, I find myself amazed to get to see little nuggets of how you are made show themselves out loud.</div>
<div>
In many instances, you don't allow fear to paralyze you, but rather it propels you forward.</div>
<div>
Last summer we had a scary moment at a pool party & when dad & I looked around you were nowhere to be seen. </div>
<div>
You were in the pool.</div>
<div>
You were underwater reaching for the side.</div>
<div>
Because you couldn't swim.</div>
<div>
Talk about a scared little momma & a terrified little girl.</div>
<div>
I still feel like I might vomit when I think about those moments & what could've happened if just minutes more had passed by.</div>
<div>
I'm grateful.</div>
<div>
I am reminded that these days are not guaranteed & therefore I will embrace these moments of total grace.</div>
<div>
But that's not the point of this story.</div>
<div>
You got out of the pool very bothered & upset by what had happened. And very determined that that would not happen again.</div>
<div>
And you took one swim lesson and you swam.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I wanna be more like you, little girl.</div>
<div>
You are brave & you are strong.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Several months ago we took the training wheels off of your bike & you said you were ready to tackle the 2-wheeler. </div>
<div>
Ready to play hard with the big kids.</div>
<div>
But the reality of the situation sank in & you decided that maybe not yet.</div>
<div>
Until this summer......you got on, you pedaled, you fell down & you said, "when you fall down you just gotta get back up...."</div>
<div>
Your words.</div>
<div>
Not mine.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I can't believe I'm watching this four year old play out big truths. Being so brave. Letting fear get behind you & move you forward.....things that adults spend lots & lots of money trying to conquer.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You, my girl, are a force.</div>
<div>
You have a role in God's big love story. </div>
<div>
God dreamed you up real good & you are dearly, dearly loved.</div>
<div>
You will only be little for a short while & then we will stand together & I will do my best to always see you as you.<br />
Not as mine.<br />
He made you to be you.<br />
And you are His....not mine.<br />
<br />
There is so much freedom in that. So much excitement in the story He has for you, if I can just let this grip loosen a bit. Part of this being your mom thing is learning to step away a little bit. Not too far. I mean, I don't want to miss anything. <br />
Just a little bit.....<br />
<br />
You're growing. So fast you're growing in all the ways you're supposed to grow. <br />
And you will fall. You will. And many don't bounce back so quickly......but you, my girl, do. You bounce up & forward & onward & you just get stronger.<br />
<br />
As I put our pictures together for our album these words start to swirl around in my head & I don't want to lose them. So as I can, I will paint the pictures of your moments in words on this blog so we can remember. I'm crazy about you little one.....my little sprite.<br />
<br />

Busier than I like to be.<br />
I wonder if I'm paying attention like I like to do.<br />
To these people that have been placed so carefully into my life.<br />
I wonder if I have gotten caught up in 'playing' for an audience that shouldn't matter so much.<br />
Am I trying to be something for someone that I'm not supposed to be...<br />
I don't know.<br />
It's strange to be learning the lessons that I can so clearly see for my kids.<br />
I feel that I am constantly trying to teach my kids to live out the purpose God's placed in their hearts. To be confident in that.<br />
To not follow the crowd if that's not where God's best is for you.<br />
And to always be brave enough to walk away.<br />
And these are the lessons that I'm learning today.<br />
<br />
We live in a big city with amazing pockets of respite and community and green space.<br />
It can be a little bit of perfect sometimes.<br />
There's a park here that is one of those little bits of perfect & I like to walk through there.<br />
The 2 littles were strolling with me one morning & we came across this<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOgd6zEdNzGBX96UZDZn6c_sWpUMqweEl2iLXS09vbe034WZde7U0oEiiUFfCRAhmbgzXR98TwFh5ED7jrUjFsKDI-d_9SP1G7CpNQgqElBcFlEUT-AiYjmR7JxHNMZwu1newzUPMzgrov/s1600/tree.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOgd6zEdNzGBX96UZDZn6c_sWpUMqweEl2iLXS09vbe034WZde7U0oEiiUFfCRAhmbgzXR98TwFh5ED7jrUjFsKDI-d_9SP1G7CpNQgqElBcFlEUT-AiYjmR7JxHNMZwu1newzUPMzgrov/s320/tree.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
And the boy asked, "why?"<br />
"Why does that tree need ropes on it & the others don't?"<br />
<br />
All of our lives we run to keep up & be noticed & be included & be a part of.....<br />
Because we are meant to live big.<br />
I believe that.<br />
I don't believe the desire to run forward is wrong.<br />
I believe it's purposefully placed in us.<br />
It's the what we're running after.<br />
And I believe we are rubber bands.<br />
I believe that there is a season for pulling back.<br />
I believe there are seasons when we need the ropes.<br />
Not to constrain us or to keep us from something.<br />
But the ropes are to help us to grow the way we are supposed to grow.<br />
Straight & tall & with great purpose.<br />
<br />
I laid in bed with my oldest tonight & we talked about some circles she's been in & how there are some things she's always allowed to talk about with us, but some things she's just not allowed to do right now.<br />
And we talked about the freedom we want for her.<br />
But that the waiting is good.<br />
That a rubber band that hasn't been pulled back doesn't go very far.<br />
And I believe, & she believes, that she's meant to go far.<br />
<br />
And for me, too......it's a pulling back season. <br />
It's a season of straightening.<br />
It's time for some ropes of support to be put back up & for me to get my eyes back where they belong so that I can be strong. <br />
And go far. <br />
Like I was made to do.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9139443174879981924.post-21340854267139949362013-04-08T20:25:00.000-07:002013-04-08T20:30:04.384-07:00X<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;"><i>**PS. Today is a day meant for raising a shout. For using whatever platform we have to say something. And that is what I'm trying to do here. There's so much I didn't say in here. And that's almost always true..... but for today.....these are my words.</i></span><br />
<br />
I'm a mom who is pretty careful about what my kids are surrounded with. <br />
Just as they learn to settle in & be confident in who they are. <br />
And it's so tough, because we all tend to take cues from those around us & we often get stuck in being what we think we ought to be. <br />
Rather than who we were made to be.<br />
Now, I'm not a person who stands opposed to everything either.<br />
I want to raise people that can be absolutely anywhere & faced with absolutely anything & be able to stand confident in the truth of who they have been made to be.<br />
I believe children are power being held at bay like the rock pulled deep in a sling shot.<br />
Waiting to be released.<br />
But not yet.<br />
And in this time I believe that the people my kids are surrounded with are their teachers.<br />
They are teaching them about value. About what makes them valuable.<br />
Always teaching & they are always learning.<br />
Do I need to be pretty to be valuable?<br />
Should I be smarter? Faster? Funnier? Nicer?<br />
What is it?<br />
We are always learning.<br />
And for now we have tried to surround them with people who expect very much for them to be their very best.<br />
And to be certain to make mistakes.<br />
And to constantly echo love & grace & bravery & kindness & honesty.<br />
<br />
And I believe that some of the most powerful teachers they have....<br />
are books.<br />
I am not of the mindset that all books are good books if they foster a love of reading.<br />
I believe there are great books that can encourage a love of reading & strengthen a person's character as well.<br />
I love introducing these littles to Lucy, Edmond, Susan & Peter the Great! And today when my little red head came home to tell me that she got called "carrots" on the playground I smiled & said, "You need to spend a little time with Anne of Green Gables" & she just smiled back. Because she & Anne have met. :)<br />
I believe that books are teaching our kids how to live in this world well. <br />
Not escape from it.<br />
I believe in leaning in to the hard stuff.<br />
The real stuff.<br />
I am eager to read <u>To Kill A Mockingbird </u>with them.<br />
Not yet.<br />
But I can hardly wait.<br />
And I will cry.<br />
And we will learn & I will remember the things that I learned from that book.<br />
<br />
That people are valuable. All people.<br />
And that the world needs brave people to stand for what is just.<br />
<br />
My kids have learned about something called the <a href="http://www.enditmovement.com/">end it movement</a> because of our involvement at our church.<br />
And some believe it's too sensitive of a topic for children to know about.<br />
But I believe it's too important not to talk about, gently & appropriately. <br />
And this world......it's just broken.<br />
This was never the way it was supposed to be.<br />
Some friends of ours helped shine a light, this past weekend, on the truth that there are more people in slavery today than at any point in history.<br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: large;">27 million people are in slavery today.</span><br />
These friends are super creative & they have awesome friends that helped them to pull it together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDN0tQzf6nqhfApBwk9W4jvP1Gh8FzjH8wCBhDPsubGbdXKiO42cSsGE4QuKjwmbU4PLvVBdoemfwHVpsmXdikTjgGG9rLZ4vtJ8c5sTnBVOWIpya9G3qkJy8NIAf9dZjPl6idcy8q6Caj/s1600/enditff.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDN0tQzf6nqhfApBwk9W4jvP1Gh8FzjH8wCBhDPsubGbdXKiO42cSsGE4QuKjwmbU4PLvVBdoemfwHVpsmXdikTjgGG9rLZ4vtJ8c5sTnBVOWIpya9G3qkJy8NIAf9dZjPl6idcy8q6Caj/s400/enditff.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiozjtnzceWlFlKRiM0hGNxUJqBULTSDWTChvur5WwNCeFnpoQ-m6ZY_RzsBqlkn7k7QoZpVgkiYIot7ksmewZhqR2ayH9aX0IhAA8vVrMmBqG0SHLej19LEK5lXhGhNERhxKEFQXpEkOSM/s1600/enditff2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiozjtnzceWlFlKRiM0hGNxUJqBULTSDWTChvur5WwNCeFnpoQ-m6ZY_RzsBqlkn7k7QoZpVgkiYIot7ksmewZhqR2ayH9aX0IhAA8vVrMmBqG0SHLej19LEK5lXhGhNERhxKEFQXpEkOSM/s640/enditff2.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
There was a truck with glass walls & inside the truck were actors playing the gut wrenching roles of women trapped in sexual slavery.<br />
This truck drove around Centennial Olympic park during the Final Four festivities to bring awareness to the shocking fact that we are living in a world....a CITY....where people are trapped in a version of enslaved hell. <br />
But a favorite story of mine from the night was the story of a dad in the crowd as the truck drove by. He had 2 kids by his side, maybe 9 & 11. And the kids tried to turn away.....but the dad made them watch. And he told them the truth.<br />
A hard truth.<br />
A real truth.<br />
About people.<br />
And yes, the real is often much harder to deal with than the imaginary.<br />
<br />
But the thing is that before I knew...........I just didn't know.<br />
And that gap of time. <br />
That <i>silence</i> is just one more person not thinking about people around us that are hurting.<br />
And it's our turn to rise up.<br />
Not to let it make us fearful, but to fill us with the hope of redemption & rescue & courage to lean in.<br />
And to raise up a generation of people willing to enter the sad & scary places in order to love.<br />
It's our job to equip these people to love <i>powerfully</i>. <br />
Not passively.<br />
<br />
These injustices are happening. Right. Now.<br />
And just because it's not directly effecting me doesn't mean I shouldn't engage.<br />
<i>Engage.</i><br />
Doing something is better than doing nothing here.<br />
And if you are like I was not too long ago, completely shocked by the fact that slavery still exists....then use this opportunity to tell someone else.<br />
People don't know.<br />
And it's time to bust the flashlights out & let it be known.<br />

I have a ton of favorite pictures and moments from the big trip. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But this series is among the top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That big girl right there... was a little on the scared-y side of riding the barnstormer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Tiny roller coaster.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
30 seconds.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And real scared.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Fear can have its handle on us from time to time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's a family affair.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There's no doubt that apple did not fall far.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But, we weren't letting fear keep us from making big memories on this trip.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Strengthening muscles of adventure & sometimes failing & getting back up again & trying new things & fun & faith.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJtqnaA37iA06lxVYTMizWCxk2Ol72DWxVgsCVjxoHo9xbOvoKklu3T-q_cGdizmHj41tKjyvgs_QVzSr553Q_GXvjHRnh5GIn5AEV1moqE9BN-zMHl0_WGCXpC2ZgChSDUL9NKjxyfLN3/s1600/IMG_0018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJtqnaA37iA06lxVYTMizWCxk2Ol72DWxVgsCVjxoHo9xbOvoKklu3T-q_cGdizmHj41tKjyvgs_QVzSr553Q_GXvjHRnh5GIn5AEV1moqE9BN-zMHl0_WGCXpC2ZgChSDUL9NKjxyfLN3/s320/IMG_0018.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I just love the delight on the face of that little babe of mine in the back. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The fearless one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Except for bees. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Terrified of bees.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And this perfect imperfect shot.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Oh my goodness.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Forever grateful that I almost dropped the camera trying to get this moment.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Priceless.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtME5riNblOJvuAFwlAJO85LLv5rPyuj5o5PENZpXHZ3cRXyAj4-BgCcE5Mpx7G-85HIHsuZzbdfdOmv1W-Zs66pn4TE3I_b76R1LxyB46vIpUDgBhM4CjEqrq_xOUaypSTzpct2_N3PKZ/s1600/IMG_0023.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhtME5riNblOJvuAFwlAJO85LLv5rPyuj5o5PENZpXHZ3cRXyAj4-BgCcE5Mpx7G-85HIHsuZzbdfdOmv1W-Zs66pn4TE3I_b76R1LxyB46vIpUDgBhM4CjEqrq_xOUaypSTzpct2_N3PKZ/s320/IMG_0023.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That muscle got a little stronger.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We didn't leave that one on the table that day because of fear.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And wouldn't you know it.....she went on to ride <i>space mountain</i> with me.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Crazy girl.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What have we started.....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She'll be riding in fast cars before I can blink & I'll have to remember that I might have helped it to begin.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But we were there for this.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This watching her became awake to something within her.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That adventure God has planted right in her heart.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I saw it wake up.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's those front row seats I've been talking about.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And this show is not nearly as long as we think it is.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And as they move into their lives & their routines & as I do the same.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I realize that the days really are flying. by.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
30 seconds....up & down & scream & laugh....& it's done.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPJubJ4lwp-aiLDnqD7FrcEODG4vFK17j760Po0fJeUNRqrAVLKrKERYmSv3YXzdHrpmCdLiaRbMeEpoy-eyjz9evvPo-NepHua44kQQXYQrUOg_GJvxLaHN2xPhQk96JsMTaLy32rEpT8/s1600/IMG_0024.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPJubJ4lwp-aiLDnqD7FrcEODG4vFK17j760Po0fJeUNRqrAVLKrKERYmSv3YXzdHrpmCdLiaRbMeEpoy-eyjz9evvPo-NepHua44kQQXYQrUOg_GJvxLaHN2xPhQk96JsMTaLy32rEpT8/s320/IMG_0024.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This trip was just what the doctor ordered.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A lot got dropped to do this thing.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And it was worth it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was so worth it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
He's got us right where he wants us right now.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And we're all inning it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Overcoming fear & learning to fail & leaning into the hard & being adventurous...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It takes practice.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And practice is what we will do as we walk out this life He has painted specifically for us.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Isn't God cool....painting stories of Himself through His people?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We say yes to that.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The ups & the downs & the goods & the bads.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yes.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This life is a <i>blink</i> & we are thankful to be in the story.</div>

<i>months</i><br />
We have a deal in our family where we don't do big parties every year. 5 & 8 you get a party.<br />
Every other year you are guaranteed to be celebrated. <br />
Because we like to celebrate in this family.<br />
Go big - as our friend Slate Fluker says.<br />
We'll celebrate for a full month....because, why not!?<br />
It's a great excuse to eat cupcakes & sip milkshakes & grab a cookie cake....all in the name of birthday month celebration.<br />
<br />
So, we knew we would do <i>something</i>. <br />
Lots of somethings, probably. <br />
But we weren't totally sure what it would be.<br />
<br />
Lee's been traveling a lot lately & he's been doing good things. <br />
But we've missed him.<br />
This little guy stuck in the middle of all the girls has<i> really</i> been missing him.<br />
And it was looking like Lee was going to be out of town for the big birthday.<br />
We couldn't figure out how to avoid it.<br />
But when your trip for work happens to be in Orlando......<br />
Well. Sometimes you just decide to plan a spur of the moment surprise trip for the littles to the mother ship.<br />
We've never been to Disney & the kids didn't have a clue!<br />
<br />
Lee left Tuesday & I began the dark of night secret packing mission.<br />
Picked the kids up from school on Wednesday & told them we were headed down to spend time with Dad. That Dad didn't want to miss Bo's birthday so we were going to be with him.<br />
And we drove & drove.<br />
Picked up Lee, & the big girl, the only reader in the car, had fallen asleep. <br />
We weren't sure how to tell them at this point, with one asleep & all.<br />
So we didn't.<br />
And about 10 minutes later the boy says from the back seat, "Disney?"<br />
And the baby follows..."are we at the Magic Kingdom!?!"<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYiNdfBNoTe-KSxgdrgiF_IAqJ6a5tbUzNV87mWLwQUHFCBydMBeD2bgEumzvWSk9SZGZEGVmwxQhMVirOD4Yx3J_VNqk8UtX66Wcdw-R4WT0kDyLULAltiTvx79enVF1EPfG_Rd04S-J_/s1600/IMG_0024.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYiNdfBNoTe-KSxgdrgiF_IAqJ6a5tbUzNV87mWLwQUHFCBydMBeD2bgEumzvWSk9SZGZEGVmwxQhMVirOD4Yx3J_VNqk8UtX66Wcdw-R4WT0kDyLULAltiTvx79enVF1EPfG_Rd04S-J_/s320/IMG_0024.JPG" width="320" /></a>And my big girl snored.<br />
It was awesome.<br />
<br />
The 4 of us giggled & were so excited & the big girl joined in on the excitement once we got out of the car to load into the hotel.<br />
<br />
There's so much in my mind & in my heart that I want to download here....but I'm exhausted.<br />
So. <br />

The other night Lee took the girls on a date. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
To a big ol' dance.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And the girls were gonna get all gussied up & everyone was ex-<i>cited</i>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the midst of all the planning, Lee decided to help my little man plan a date for me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
That boy kept a total secret from me....apparently discussing all the plans with his sisters & his teacher! And no one ever spilled the beans.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The boys knocked on the door at about 530 & my baby yelled, "COME IN!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
:) like a true little lady.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Quick 'date' etiquette education was had & then we opened the door to 2 dashing men with flowers in hand.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Swoon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicICL4ORbCsE72bWEqIUBoUNVR7u2zxGq8BMcJZjM0And45Nu5RuXGF2bICPPqbgJyH5OvqV1yQPx6lAz6b0ZTii2DZBe3e3E5VbLLLy1b0cz2yc2Xgw7_pddw6C_g-un-B4Eq5R066FVI/s1600/DSC_0200.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicICL4ORbCsE72bWEqIUBoUNVR7u2zxGq8BMcJZjM0And45Nu5RuXGF2bICPPqbgJyH5OvqV1yQPx6lAz6b0ZTii2DZBe3e3E5VbLLLy1b0cz2yc2Xgw7_pddw6C_g-un-B4Eq5R066FVI/s640/DSC_0200.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
He handed me a hand written note with instructions on where to go & then another note at dinner with a gift card to pay for dinner.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We played dot to dot & had sweet conversation & he was the <u>perfect</u> gentleman.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And before we left the restaurant we made a stop in the ladies room :) because that's where you go when you're 5 & you're in a public place with your mommy. And as he was in the stall next to mine & a lady was waiting just outside, he said, "Mom. You're the best mom."</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And the whole thing made me want to laugh & good cry because it was all so adorable & so precious.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj1pSVkflu5tecIx_81dlJWhCZqAh83ywwLbnb13FqHaebrVmQ6HAxm-8B8yLaJEj1LhXT8atuIT_wY-2MW-2uyHdIaxDBAb0Wvc3KAp0JX7x6Ybz40OOZeHKQUzrNZ2UzBWApCeQvJuCj/s1600/DSC_0227.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj1pSVkflu5tecIx_81dlJWhCZqAh83ywwLbnb13FqHaebrVmQ6HAxm-8B8yLaJEj1LhXT8atuIT_wY-2MW-2uyHdIaxDBAb0Wvc3KAp0JX7x6Ybz40OOZeHKQUzrNZ2UzBWApCeQvJuCj/s400/DSC_0227.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Another note took us to Baskin Robbins & and another with words just for me & another asking me to watch Star Wars with him. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was a perfect evening.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFJRCxiymd_dqpUO5yTPag6L5CM8JTdGLtA7K20XgySG8a4yRF2QB6fii5L-WjuhVxm6TQkIuNSIq-cfiF_zNqTRSV6t2i6gyVsHMf8sSTdoLTGYpGHum7feV9x94pNyFgL_eXYkM9zwcP/s1600/DSC_0205.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFJRCxiymd_dqpUO5yTPag6L5CM8JTdGLtA7K20XgySG8a4yRF2QB6fii5L-WjuhVxm6TQkIuNSIq-cfiF_zNqTRSV6t2i6gyVsHMf8sSTdoLTGYpGHum7feV9x94pNyFgL_eXYkM9zwcP/s400/DSC_0205.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love this kid. I love his heart & I love his heart for justice & his love for his sisters & how he put a scoop of rainbow sherbet & chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream together...because only a really adventurous person would do that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm learning about boys & very specifically<i> this</i> boy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He encourages us.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He's often got me in stitches of laughter.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And he's got me on my knees.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<i>Lord, thank you for this little man. Thank you for trusting me to be his mom. My prayer is that he would see & delight in the plans that You have for him. And that he would walk that out for an audience of one.</i></div>
<br />

OK. I am not a huge fan of Valentine's Day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I said it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Confession is good for the soul.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But I do enjoy me some crafty time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I enjoy all the<i> love</i> that comes with Valentine's day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I just don't love the commercialization of it all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I am certain that I don't stand alone in that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Plus, I hate standing in line.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Does that speak a little to my need to grow in my humility??</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Probably. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So making it a priority to try to have a dinner out on a day like this.....well, it just stresses me out a tad.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But like I said....construction paper & glue & what have you. I <i>do</i> enjoy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And these particular little valentine makers did a fantastic job! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Don't cha think!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu2J9xMM4LgvagpAgeEG4jxQgky9Zg0t58RyIJaJDXyUIScUgJx_LKMdHFcRDAyeT-Tl82lbhqbl4E24a6HCAKLGGSKzsRc7q3LImaQjRCbgQdGZFyqXayuc9Hzp5VjcwGJyAifEnEgIhA/s1600/DSC_0237.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="267" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu2J9xMM4LgvagpAgeEG4jxQgky9Zg0t58RyIJaJDXyUIScUgJx_LKMdHFcRDAyeT-Tl82lbhqbl4E24a6HCAKLGGSKzsRc7q3LImaQjRCbgQdGZFyqXayuc9Hzp5VjcwGJyAifEnEgIhA/s400/DSC_0237.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And so we carved out time that wasn't in the budget to sit still & create these little wonders to recognize a day focused on love. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was a nice practice in 'love is patient'...</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When I choose to see God for who He is I can't help but be amazed.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Patience.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Something that is tough for me.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sitting still is not my forte.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Waiting is not my favorite.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But for a child to create a valentine for one of the very first times in their lives, <i>ever</i>.....takes time.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It takes patience.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
He is at work in me.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And He's been patient.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And so I will do my best to remember that I probably do not work as quickly as He would like me to sometimes. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I probably don''t do it exactly right the major majority of the time.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But the process.....</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The process is perfect.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And the process.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It takes patience.</div>
<br />

A group of parents make really yummy food & just serves<i> them</i>. <br />
It was a sweet afternoon.<br />
Because the faculty is amazing.<br />
Really....so amazing.<br />
My kids came down when school was dismissed & they were having fun while the teachers ate. One thing they did was to play with a large dry erase board that was in the room. <br />
The<i> possibilities</i>, right!?<br />
At one point they had written "I love _____________" & they filled in each blank with the name of each teacher in the room. <br />
Little suck-ups.<br />
:)<br />
<br />
But at one point I looked over & my 8 year old had drawn a complete orchestra. <br />
Laid out & labeled with different groups of musicians labeled.<br />
It was impressive to watch her.<br />
You could tell she was deep in thought, trying to get it right. <br />
Trying to recall it from some part of her brain.<br />
Marker in one hand & stepped back from the board a little bit.<br />
Amazing.<br />
She has seen that somewhere else....I'm guessing in her music class.<br />
But to be able to recall it.<br />
I don't know.<br />
It was a moment where I stood & saw this magical brain at work in this girl.<br />
My girl.<br />
I don't know....I just saw something <i>new</i>.<br />
And I commented on how amazing it was.<br />
Got called to a task & was going to return to learn more about this work of art.<br />
And when I looked back up.<br />
It was gone.<br />
She erased it.<br />
She simply moved on.<br />
<br />
And something in me realized I had missed the moment.<br />
I felt that little sick feeling in the pit of my tummy.<br />
<br />
There was no more, <i>"tell me about it, sister"</i> opportunity.<br />
It was just ..... not there anymore.<br />
<br />
But I'm thankful I was there for it.<br />
<br />
I saw it.<br />
<br />
And I stand a little bit farther back from her right now....kind of like she did at the dry erase board.<br />
Not with a marker in my hand.<br />
Just admiring the work going on.<br />
Because sometimes I don't get to see it so tangibly.<br />
But there's a remarkable work going on.....<br />
<br />
<i>(PS - to my cousin Nancy, I promise I have some awesome pictures of the boy coming up....camera issues)</i><br />
<br />Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9139443174879981924.post-75623152997275673492013-02-06T21:08:00.003-08:002013-02-06T21:08:26.996-08:00front row.How is it that I get to witness these people growing up?<br />
I get overwhelmed just thinking about it sometimes. <br />
These lives, powerful lives, in my midst being trained up for big things. <br />
<br />
I love these children. <br />
<br />
I love all that God teaches me through them & I am realizing lately that I haven't been paying attention like I should. <br />
<br />
Like I used to.<br />
<br />
But He's pulling me back in....to become a good student again of my children. <br />
To see where I can help to mold & train, to help lead them to the One who made them & to see what God is doing in my life through them.<br />
<br />
They are small....but they are <i>only</i> small. Because they are power waiting to be released. And they will be a force for good in this world. <br />
<br />
My baby, my baby who is 4, she knows the names of the squirrels in our yard. <br />
She calls them by name. <br />
She yells for them to get out of the road. <br />
She knows the squirrels. <br />
Jumpy & Jack & Jackson are the 3 we see the most.<br />
J names, mostly.<br />
And I'll say...."I think that must be Jack"<br />
"No. That's Jumpy, mom"<br />
It's almost always Jumpy - he's her favorite.<br />
And I don't blame her.<br />
He seems to have the most fun.<br />
I'll be honest....I can't tell them apart.<br />
But she swears she can.<br />
<br />
And I believe her.<br />
Because she's paying attention.<br />
<br />
And when I see that she pays attention to the squirrels & their goings on in the yard I am brought back to attention to the most important job that God has put before me.<br />
The job I always wanted.<br />
This job that is so fleeting.<br />
<br />
And the projects & the hobbies & the responsibilities will get done. <br />
But they will not get in the way.<br />
<br />
These are my people.<br />
I was called here for this.<br />
The greatest show on earth.....& I've got front row seats.<br />
<br />
I'm not missing this.<br />
<br />

And when I asked her what she wanted to do....she said, "I just want my friends to come over & watch a movie"<br />
<br />
Well, alrighty. <br />
We can handle that.<br />
<br />
And so we made the plan. <br />
Some girls from school + two.<br />
We bought movie theater candy, bought popcorn, sent the evite, made a photo booth for the occasion....because, how fun is THAT!?<br />
<br />
And then my girl spiked a 103.5 fever & the party was canceled.<br />
And she honestly felt too bad to even care.<br />
And I honestly was thrilled to have my big girl need to be babied for a few days.<br />
These birthdays are bittersweet for this momma.<br />
<br />
So, we finally got to come back around and celebrate my 8 year old....EIGHT. YEAR. OLD.<br />
What!?<br />
<br />
And 10 little girls, with my little man & baby girl running at their heels, ran into this house & we had a blast.<br />
She was on cloud nine.<br />
I'm thankful for the answered prayer in her life for good friends to walk along side. <br />
I'm thankful that I get to watch all of these girls grow up together.<br />
I'm just so thankful.<br />
So, happy birthday to my thinker.<br />
My super reader.<br />
My competitive card game player.<br />
My American Girl doll lover.<br />
My lover of animals.<br />
My silliest.<br />
My 3rd in command.<br />
My early riser.<br />
The mother hen & the one who made me a mother.<br />
I love you. Happy birthday.<br />

<a href="http://www.enditmovement.com/"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVjajErjYG2susQyID6tV7B2mI-6FXyw9DNZ2tUuy3pHOz7Lf5SWwTiTw-3ok8C56FAteO53J9b2n6keeS_hIT6Ek2ucCoyFcpi14QNi7xiYVrAeT82oLQgd0S9CimdX6HpfbjN3XnOlxY/s200/endit2.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
Well, I have this whole other post ready to go & it's full of emotion & I probably shouldn't post it...but I'm learning to be brave. And anyway, maybe I'll post it tomorrow. <br />
<br />
<i>Today</i>, I don't want anything else to overshadow the opportunity to tell people about slavery.<br />
<br />
I heard someone recently talk about the civil rights movement....how I can truly look back at that time with a big question mark on my face. What?! Seriously? People <i>sold</i> for other people's profit?!<br />
Human beings??<br />
And how in THE WORLD, did we as a society allow it to continue?<br />
<br />
Because we are <i><b>not</b></i> powerless.<br />
We <b><u>can</u></b>, & <b><u>should</u></b>, stand up.<br />
<br />
Sure, it's uncomfortable.<br />
Sometimes it's unpopular.<br />
We may lose friends in the process.<br />
<br />
But when those are the only consequences for standing up for another person's freedom....I just don't see them as valid excuses.<br />
And yet, I'm sure I've let those consequences dictate a lot of decisions in my life.<br />
<br />
But today.<br />
<br />
Today....there are <u>more slaves in the world than in any other time in human history</u>.<br />
<br />
And it's hard to start seeing this because when we start to open our eyes to this truth that <i>even children </i>in this world are trapped in the world of forced labor & in the sex trade....we will no doubt have to face the fact that we fund some of this operation.<br />
<br />
I don't think any of us wants to be a part of physically & emotionally hurting other people.<br />
I think that we all just need a little education.<br />
I still need a LOT of education.<br />
Which is why I'm so thankful for this website. <a href="http://www.enditmovement.com/">www.enditmovement.com</a>.<br />
<br />
Today .... especially if you're just learning about this, you can do a few things to help yourselves & get in on the fight.<br />
*Sign the pledge on the website. That's easy.....just type in your email address.<br />
*Follow enditmovement on twitter ... I honest to goodness joined twitter just to be able to do that. Now <br />
I can't stop talking & #doingthis...which is another problem all by itself.<br />
* #enditmovement in your tweets ALL day today.<br />
*Tell 10 people.<br />
<br />
There are other things.....like learning about your own slavery footprint. You can find all of that on the website. But the most important thing for today is to tell someone.<br />
Tell 10 specific people about slavery.<br />
Give them the web address.<br />
<br />
Let's be the people that bring this awful operation down. In <i><b>OUR</b></i> lifetime.<br />
I want to tell the story of freedom to my grandkids - & I want to hold my head high knowing I was in on the fight.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We apparently wore the kids O.U.T. because Lee & I enjoyed a cup of coffee <i>before</i> we decided to head on upstairs & wake the munchkins up. And we had it to-<i>gether</i> this year. We laid out brand new slippers upstairs by their beds. We had written a note to each kid. And then we woke them up & pointed those things out to them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Not the way we pictured that going.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
But, you know, whatever....it's Christmas morning!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This happens to be my favorite picture of the day. For obvious reasons.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And I just couldn't let the year go on without posting it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I hope to be back with more real soon...but for now, there's my baby...& here's a picture soon after with my little man.</div>

Don't anyone tell the big sister that she is older than the little sister.<br />
Please don't.<br />
<div>
Both are completely lost in this moment of pretend & dancing & giggling. </div>
<div>
And there are moments when I know she knows she's bigger because I see her look at her little with pride.<br />
<i>Knowin</i>g....just that knowing that she can do <i>more</i>. <br />
But I believe that the big girl is still so young in her heart that she is <i>just </i>beginning that fight of being 'too big' for things. And so these moments are fewer. And so I will embrace every one that I can. Sisters with 2 big imaginations....I love my seats in their lives.<br />

We are shifting down & pulling out of things in order to create margin in our lives. <br />
<br />
It's just that we have done without margin for so long that it's taking some adjustment. <br />
There's this baseball world that 's new to me. And I'm enjoying it. There's the swimming thing which I also love. There's the painting thing...obvious...love. So there's a lot of good & a lot that we love...but we're toning it down.<br />
<br />
As these littles start to grow into these people....I begin to see how I have to let go a little bit. <br />
How God has these roads paved for <i>them</i> that are <i>their</i> roads & I get to walk along side for a while. <br />
The baby & my little man had an eye appointment today & their eye thing...it's theirs. <br />
It's not mine. <br />
I mean, of course, we play a major role in managing the care around their eyes....but ultimately it's theirs. <br />
And today my 3 year old learned that she has to wear a patch like her sister. <br />
<u>And she was pumped! </u><br />
So excited to put a glittery sticker on. her. eye. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuYi0WdppQ9WXAKfxV6nuFDUgk_yMuI-L-evkYDH5opA2gu9A52L9ksnjc_6ypFkEwCgXJEUSstFSSVvKPcQtafvXPMeWoqLqARvhIfVdgo_rOdvwlpZ6Vt7Lq2jB439xaTSAvMJvL3xhH/s1600/blogampatch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuYi0WdppQ9WXAKfxV6nuFDUgk_yMuI-L-evkYDH5opA2gu9A52L9ksnjc_6ypFkEwCgXJEUSstFSSVvKPcQtafvXPMeWoqLqARvhIfVdgo_rOdvwlpZ6Vt7Lq2jB439xaTSAvMJvL3xhH/s320/blogampatch.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And 5 minutes later she lost her mind.<br />
<br />
And she cried for the next hour & 55 minutes until I told her that she could take it off. <i>(& I am aware that it's a not good photograph....but I was thankful to have a phone with a camera on it. & technology still blows my mind.)</i><br />
Truthfully, it wasn't all crying. It was a lot of whining & it all made my blood pressure sky rocket & walking through the target is normally such a therapeutic experience for me. <br />
Not so much on this particular day.<br />
And I'll need to return a lot of things that I tossed in my basket in an effort to block out the pitch that her voice hits when she's so upset. <br />
My distraction from the screeching was convincing myself that I really<i> can </i>wear orange & that yes, you can <i>certainly</i> go a size smaller.<br />
<br />
Well. I cannot. Do either of those things.<br />
<br />
But the point is I guess is that.....who knows. I lost it somewhere in there.<br />
Maybe the point was just that 3 of the babies in my world right now can't see & I am their momma. And I can't walk this road for them.<br />
But somehow I must trust the author of their stories to redeem this. A dear friend reminded me that He wastes nothing. And isn't that statement just filled with all kinds of hope. <br />
Because I feel like I have wasted a lot.<br />
<br />
He is an artist. A creator. A lover. A grand gift giver. A redeemer.<br />
And may the patches on their little eyes remind me to pray that they would have eyes to see Him for who He truly is.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9139443174879981924.post-25051967151681343592012-04-10T04:30:00.000-07:002012-04-10T04:30:01.010-07:005<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
No way.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I can't believe I missed the big happy birthday on the blog post for the little man in our family.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
He turned 5 like a professional. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Like he's done it before.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
He has been looking forward to being 5 since he realized that he <i>could</i> turn 5.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was a big weekend for the kid & super duper busy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But in the craziness of it all, he really just wanted to eat at his favorite mexican restaurant.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Wish granted buddy.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Because, well, it's our favorite mexican restaurant too.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Granddaddy came in town & gave lots of presents.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You had your 1st ever baseball game.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We brought a new pinterest tradition into our family involving balloon popping with money inside & your sisters treated you like a king.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And you wear royalty well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I am crazy about you.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I cannot believe you're 5 & so tall.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love the hilarious things that come out of your mouth.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love that your name means "gracious" & that that is a word that I would easily use to describe who you are at your core.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love that you try to answer really hard theological questions with, "What letter does it start with?"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For example, "Did Jesus really have to die on the cross?"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You: "oooo! I know! ..... what letter does it start with?"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love that I can check on you in the middle of the night, kiss your check & in your sleep you will say, "I love you, mom"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You are a special kid & I cannot believe that I get to be your mom.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Seriously!? I love being with you in these days.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And we're going to rock the 5 thing out. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's going to be awesome.</div>

Seriously, I could write a book with all the funny things she says in it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I get that no one would buy it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But I certainly would keep a copy handy. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And I bet my dad would.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And my cousin Nancy.<br />
And maybe a few others.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
There would be about 4 copies & in our minds they would be 'best sellers'</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She seems too old to be just 3. <br />
She's a tiny little thing with a mind that her little body just cannot catch up with. <br />
And to me it's the perfect combination.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Because anything said at that high pitched voice is going to be cute. <i>Almost</i> all of the time.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And I'm coming to simply expect the funny.....</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and you're going to need to just expect that it will be documented.<br />

And it's not like this is the best of pictures.....but the bow tie. Can we just take a moment & talk about how incredibly handsome that kid looks in his bow tie. Which he loves, by the way. He would wear it all the time - morning, noon & night - if he had his way.<br />
And since we're on the word "handsome" - that's the word the baby uses to describe clothes when she hates them. I'll put something on her & she'll scrunch up her face & whine, "but I look handsome....."<br />
<br />
I know, the baby can be dramatic. That's all that's going on in this picture. She was fine just as soon as someone paid her the attention she was looking for. I love her & I love her drama. We're kindred spirits in that respect.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9139443174879981924.post-52946315994739259982012-04-01T18:40:00.001-07:002012-04-01T20:10:42.951-07:00going to the chapel<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
We have been riding the roller coaster around here. But the good kind. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's been really really busy.....but the kind of busy that is exciting. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Lee's little brother got married & all the kids got to be a part of it.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They had a blast, of course. Stood so tall walking down the aisle. I could barely see them as we were all leaning over one another trying to catch a glimpse, but I heard that the big girl methodically & slowly dropped her petals & the baby tried to carry the big basket & just tossed fistfuls of petals wherever. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I hear the big girl looked irritated.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Sounds about right.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And I can picture that in my mind....so I'm good.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I did get to see the boy - held that Bible with both hands & walked like a little man in that tuxedo. When did he start showing little signs of becoming such a big big boy?!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I told them all weekend to trust us. That they didn't have a choice in the clothes they would wear & that the sugar would be limited & they would have to take naps & that they would need to be big about it....because something BIG was coming. <br />
A party. <br />
A celebration that I couldn't even describe because they've never seen anything like it before. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And they did.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They ate well, rested, behaved beautifully through the wedding......</div>
<br />
And then the party.<br />

All the food - they didn't really care about.<br />
The pink sprite - it was pretty awesome.<br />
But it was the band.<br />
The boy, who is more reserved than the girls, walked onto the dance floor curious, but a little uncertain. And he stood super still. <br />
And then his legs started shaking.<br />
And I smiled & just watched. Tried to engage him in a dance, but he was in the middle of something & would have nothing of it.<br />
He shook & stared at the floor for I don't know how long & then something came out of him & he just started moving!!! <br />
Danced all night.<br />
<br />
<i>All of them</i> danced all night. Tried to copy the moves of the backup dancers & did the Soul Train dance & learned a line dance & tried to learn the worm & it was so. much. fun.<br />
At 11ish PM I saw the baby about to fall asleep in the arms of her newly married uncle & around 1115 I took her to get something to drink & she said, "I'm not thirsty, I'm just so tired."<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
We waved goodbye to my new sister & brother in law as they left in a boat & a shooting star </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
made it's way across the sky.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That was about right.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The punctuation mark on the perfect evening.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And we're all still remembering the fun & trying to pick up the pieces that fell to the ground as we left town to party it up. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
And it was well worth it.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9139443174879981924.post-20615214450246351402012-03-12T08:44:00.005-07:002012-03-12T13:11:24.146-07:00black or white, but mostly grey with a whole lot of color<div><i>Beware of the lack of flow or order or anything normal in this post....but there are things trying to be get out of me that want to be said :)...I have a point, I almost always do, it's just whether or not it got out of me in an understandable fashion is debatable.</i></div><div><br /></div>I remember when my oldest, or is it eldest? anyway...moving on...I remember when she was just a baby & trying to roll over. I remember seeing that she was almost there & not doing anything to help her. I knew that this was a milestone for <i>her</i> & I wanted<i> her</i> to master it.<div> <div>I think the story of the butterfly stuck with me....the one where a person walking down the sidewalk saw a butterfly struggling to break free from his cocoon, so the passerby grabbed some scissors to help the creature take flight....but the thing is that God designed a butterfly to push his way through the cocoon so that all of the goo from the cocoon will be removed from his wings <i>so that </i>he can fly. This butterfly never flew. </div><div>And I think I have shared this story here before.</div><div><br /></div><div>I tend to be a person who leans towards personal empowerment. </div><div>When I took a personality test recently I was shocked to have to answer a question that read something like this: are you a person who values mercy or justice?</div><div>Um. </div><div>I hate that question.</div><div>Pick one. </div><div>Even just going through the thought process of picking one will tell you a lot about yourself, I think...</div><div><br /><div>That baby genius who learned to roll over all by herself is now reading & reading really well. We are at a point in her life where she'll get to a word she doesn't know & I find that sometimes I let her struggle through it - <i>sound it out, remember the rules, you can do it</i> - & other times when I simply tell her the word & we move on.</div><div>Both responses are correct depending on the word.</div><div>Both are helping to propel her forward as she strengthens her reading skills.</div><div><br /></div><div>Lee & I recently went through a season when the Lord placed something heavy on our hearts & then called us to action. The burden was so heavy & the conviction so clear that it seemed to <i>us</i> that it would be clear to everyone. We honestly thought we had just woken up to something that everyone else was surely aware of. We were surprised when people didn't see things the way that we did. </div><div>And it has sent us on a journey.</div><div>We've been in the cocoon. </div><div><br /></div><div>We go to church with some very talented musicians. Well known musicians that are probably paid well for their talent as they are popular in Christian music circles. And I hear criticism about that. <i>Should they make as much money as they do? Is it right for Christians to be so 'popular'?</i> <i>People aren't following Jesus they're just following a Christian culture. </i>And within these circles of the Christian world I hear attacks. And then we watched one of these men accept a Grammy for his album. And in the room filled with Christians this man is loved. In a room full of non-Christians.....I didn't hear applause & I saw people checking their phones & all of a sudden the other side of the story was clear. </div><div>It felt lonely & I wondered if the people in that room hated Jesus, because I know people do & I may have been one of those people at one point in my life, but now every time I hear of someone hating Jesus I am certain they have never taken a pure look. I get angry that I believe He has been misrepresented & anyway....I felt proud to support the ministry of this man & his music because I saw so clearly that He is playing for the audience of One. And the One has brought many to gather in worship when Chris sings.</div><div><br /></div><div>God places burdens on our hearts that shape us & make us into the people He is making us into. People don't always see things the same way. Political parties make you decide.....do you think that we should give handouts to people who need money? Or do you think we should take the cushion away so that people can be empowered to succeed? Do you think that 'wealthy' people should be forced to give portions of their money to the government? Or do you think that 'wealthy' people should be allowed to do what they want to with their money?And I am learning that I don't think it's that simple.</div><div><br /></div><div>I hate that we live in a time when we think that really big, emotional & very real situations are as simple as 'this way' or 'that way'.</div><div><br /></div><div>The <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc">Kony 2012</a> video is spreading like wildfire & with it comes the passion & the criticism.</div><div>I have heard all kinds from the white Americans 'need' to rescue black people to the salaries these people from Invisible Children take. </div><div><br /></div><div>Sometimes individuals need the room to grow & succeed & to squeeze out of the cocoon all on their own with people standing by cheering them on. And sometimes people need to be rescued. I don't care what color your skin is. </div><div><br /></div><div>I would say that the LRA is something of a horror story for many people & I would hate for the argument of how things should be done or the politics surrounding that to shadow the faces of the people living through this nightmare.</div><div><br /></div><div>I think that human rescue should not be political, but rather should be personal. So if God has placed a passionate burden on the hearts of some people to stop a murderous man.....I think that's awesome. If He has not placed that specific burden on your heart or my heart.....I think that's OK too. I think God has wired us differently & there are a whole lot of hurting people in the world that need our attention. I'm thankful to live in a country that had the resources & the moral character to step in when Adolf Hitler was wiping out a massive number of innocent people. And I am OK being criticized if our country steps in to help speak up for those who cannot speak up for themselves. </div><div><br /></div><div>I am OK with that.</div><div><br /></div><div>Not everyone is OK with that.</div><div><br /></div><div>But I hope that the disagreement around that could be tabled for a moment to simply consider the brutality & reality of the situation. And maybe more importantly, find out what burdens your heart so deeply....because there is something there. It may be hidden under a lot of bad experiences or comfort, but there's something placed on each of our hearts that is purposed for something important. </div></div></div><div><br /></div><div>And when we tap into<i> that - </i>then we'll see the church rockin & rollin like God intended for it to.</div><div><br /></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9139443174879981924.post-86489749250844171932012-02-27T05:19:00.006-08:002012-02-27T10:58:14.891-08:0027 million.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJk72xz3VGzeKkZGp8EAVGPmk5bZv-Y_uMaTVORPfjNwOREzVzM_kXqTKWxht19Z7RH6gLie2HXpZdFI7MHVMuCxbvEIKPDoc17SvMfq91W2MoiUWh9KdOOHvi5E-sQJzVKlNZwWH4ZWBX/s1600/passion1.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJk72xz3VGzeKkZGp8EAVGPmk5bZv-Y_uMaTVORPfjNwOREzVzM_kXqTKWxht19Z7RH6gLie2HXpZdFI7MHVMuCxbvEIKPDoc17SvMfq91W2MoiUWh9KdOOHvi5E-sQJzVKlNZwWH4ZWBX/s400/passion1.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713808098262118178" /></a><div><br /></div>So, at Passion 2012 many incredible things happened. Which doesn't surprise me anymore. God seems to show up & the willingness & eagerness inside the students present tends to explode with love & mercy & justice & all of the things that God is about. <div>This year the conference stood for & asked the students to raise money to end modern day slavery. </div><div>This sculpture was raised & covered with items touched by people in bondage. The students wrote prayers & Scripture & their words as they prayed for & committed to be aware of these individual, precious people represented by these items.<div>I love that this sculpture stands for freedom, because that's what Jesus stands for.......& I often wonder if people really know that. I love that the people who took part in the sculpture know that & want the world to know & remember that Jesus cares deeply for these people & calls us to care deeply as well & act on their behalf.</div><div>This video was released this week & it's awesome. </div><br /><iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/H1pthSgxTC0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe></div><div><br /></div><div>Tonight they will begin a <a href="http://72daysforfreedom.com/">72 day campaign for freedom</a>. And you can read more about it <a href="http://72daysforfreedom.com/">here</a>.</div><div>And all 2 of you out there reading this can at least know what this is all about. If you are in Atlanta & see this 130 ft arm reaching towards Heaven, at least now you know a little bit about it. If you don't live in Atlanta.....then maybe now you know a little bit more about some terrible that's going on in our world today. </div><div>More slaves in the world today than in any other time in history. </div><div>And this blog has served as a record for our family....& this is part of our tapestry now. It has touched us & I want it documented. </div><div>And so it is. </div><div>And as you go through the day today, remember the people who are trapped right now. We play a part in that & I am learning & agree that boycotting is not the answer. I don't know the answer to make this nightmare go away for these people. But I believe in prayer. And I believe the Lord has heard their cries & has called His people to respond. </div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9139443174879981924.post-76582576280347308322012-02-19T19:31:00.003-08:002012-02-19T19:38:04.919-08:00dr reportWell. <div>We loaded up & headed to the eye doctor. He's a great doctor. Called us back from the waiting room himself!! And my 3 in glasses followed behind with the baby constantly looking back, <i>"it's not my turn to get drops, right mom?" </i><div><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">And the big girl jumped in the chair, ready for the challenge ahead of her & so hopeful. & my heart sank as I heard her struggle through the letters. </span></i></div><div><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">When I saw how big the letters were that she couldn't read I thought I might cry</span> for<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"> her right then.</span></i></div><div><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">But he put drops in her eyes to dilate her pupils & we waited. And after he checked her eyes again he said that her vision has changed!!! </span></i></div><div><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">When he got the right prescription on her she read through those letters all the way to the bottom - missing one. She mistook an "F" for a "P"! Easy mistake.</span></i></div><div><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">The patch is working :).</span></i></div><div><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">She only has to wear it for 2 hours a day rather than 4 & she was so excited!!!</span></i></div><div><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">We are thrilled & thankful to see the Lord restoring her vision.</span></i></div><div><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">He's a redemptive God. A God of restoration. & we will hold tight to Him regardless.</span></i></div><div><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;">Thank you for your prayers!<br /></span></i><div><br /></div></div></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9139443174879981924.post-50973596731485151662012-02-15T04:49:00.000-08:002012-02-15T04:49:00.125-08:00her eyes.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9td4f-ZZ0z1LNslBpBI00HWWhl2xko0E0FQPOZGnfx6_DSbII4PorOfL8gmWt2peAYCapNOx0wWUAGFZBw4hog-Dvmb4xDHPqUmL7pdgk-zH16aPPpanlun3JF10walDYkWJzZMwH_8Fs/s1600/glasses.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9td4f-ZZ0z1LNslBpBI00HWWhl2xko0E0FQPOZGnfx6_DSbII4PorOfL8gmWt2peAYCapNOx0wWUAGFZBw4hog-Dvmb4xDHPqUmL7pdgk-zH16aPPpanlun3JF10walDYkWJzZMwH_8Fs/s400/glasses.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5709193253233285282" /></a><div style="text-align: center;">My baby....well, my big girl.....goes to the dr this week to learn about how her eye is doing. </div><div style="text-align: center;">She's been a trooper. </div><div style="text-align: center;"> She is so responsible about wearing her patch for her 4 hours every day. I often don't even have to remind her to put it on. She just does it.</div><div style="text-align: center;">And when we found out that the littles were getting glasses, she didn't complain that they didn't have to wear patches & she did. She asked <i>'why?'</i> & sighed a little because it's hard to do things like this all by yourself......but she moved on.</div><div style="text-align: center;">She's been strong & I'm so proud of her & I'm jotting it down here because I want her to never forget that I admire her for how she has handled this. It's not a big deal in the big picture. </div><div style="text-align: center;">We know that. </div><div style="text-align: center;"> She knows that. </div><div style="text-align: center;">But she wishes she could see normally & if she can't she just wishes that she could not have to wear her patch.....as pretty & fun as they are. Some days she just wants, and these are her words, "for people to not stare at me." </div><div style="text-align: center;">So. She's praying & I'm praying with her. And we would love for anyone reading this to pray about this part of her story......that her vision would be great. Great enough to say farewell to the pretty patches. And that we would completely trust that the Lord has a big story for her life & whatever that looks like, that we will rejoice. And God gets the glory for all of it because it's His big amazing canvas.</div><div style="text-align: center;">Not perfection. Perfection, or even the attempt or desire for perfection, keeps us clinging to ourselves or to another's applause. We want whatever it is that keeps us close to Him.</div><div style="text-align: center;">Patch or no patch.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9139443174879981924.post-22245470309221364422012-02-14T05:57:00.000-08:002012-02-14T17:38:07.991-08:00the hearts part deux<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO7pTYSALuaGPDx37vBjETgt4i0DB2nbpd-jAg6LKGGpeK34dyZqtFdvD3p6Vylz30AaS7uXTD1XRr4Ip44USrL3v_mTGabfblhZ2RLTOlsH0dxrgSaVgRS8MlE3TOvD_bD_0hJGjK4l05/s1600/blog51.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhO7pTYSALuaGPDx37vBjETgt4i0DB2nbpd-jAg6LKGGpeK34dyZqtFdvD3p6Vylz30AaS7uXTD1XRr4Ip44USrL3v_mTGabfblhZ2RLTOlsH0dxrgSaVgRS8MlE3TOvD_bD_0hJGjK4l05/s400/blog51.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5708835801583915122" /></a>We had a blast making these!! <div>It has been nice to have a little time carved out to really spend some time this year, this season, whatever..... it's been nice to have time. </div><div>It's funny, it's not like the time hasn't been there all along - we have just filled it up with stuff that I honestly can't really remember. <i>These </i>are the moments I remember & it's usually because the kids won't let me forget! Short amount of amazingly messy happy times are totally multiplied. </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
